Timing is Everything!

EDH is very different from 60 card Magic, and with it comes different habits. Here is a damaging habit that can lead to lower quality gameplay (and in my opinion, less fun): Timing things as early as possible 100% of the time makes sense when you’re eager to play your cool cards and splashy spells. But have you ever wondered why 60 card players will often wait until your end step to do things? Well, keeping as much mana open for as long as possible before you decide on what to do does a few things. First, it maximizes your options on what you could potentially do by allowing you to gain as much information as possible before making a decision of execution of a spell or action. Other than that, it also keeps your opponents on their toes–with more open mana and more cards in hand, there are more risks for interaction or removal. Keeping your game plan as hidden as possible is a great strength in 60 card, and applying it to commander is an easy way to increase the quality of your gameplay quickly. Of course, it’s not always necessary–on that first turn of the game, it isn’t usually super relevant whether you land go on your first or second main phase. But outside of pretty obviously low-intensity moments, it may be beneficial to try out later timing. Go on, try it out! Let me know what happens!
